Strange QuarterAn independent local guide

A name to explore.

The Strange Quarter is an informal cultural label around Manchester’s northern city-centre edge, reaching towards Salford. It is not an official neighbourhood boundary.

Start with places, not borders

For a first visit, use a specific venue as your destination. Hidden is on Mary Street; the DBA is on Cheetham Hill Road; The Yard is on Bent Street. Their addresses give you a much more useful starting point than treating “Strange Quarter” as a postcode.

Accounts of the area also discuss The White Hotel on the Salford side. This first directory is deliberately small: it covers places for which we have assembled practical, linked visitor information. It will grow as more information becomes available.

Getting your bearings

Manchester Victoria is a useful place to start planning a trip to this part of the city. Check the actual route to your venue and your journey home, especially for late events. Use the Bee Network journey planner for current public transport options.

Open the area map for the streets around the venues. The map is a navigation aid, not a claim about where the quarter starts and ends.

A neighbourhood in change

Manchester and Salford councils have developed the Strangeways and Cambridge Strategic Regeneration Framework. Salford Council says it was endorsed in November 2025 and now informs future planning decisions. Its proposals cover housing, business space, green space and transport.

A framework is a plan for potential change. It does not mean that every proposed building or park has planning permission, funding or a construction date. Read the council’s current framework page and supporting documents for the detail.

What this guide is here for

We want to make it easier to discover the places already here and understand changes as they happen. That includes the people who work, live and make things in the area, as well as those visiting for a night out.

We distinguish event information from opinion and proposals from completed work. Venue listings are starting points, not reviews based on visits we have not made.
